Architectural Engineering
Statement:
Architectural engineering combines study in architecture with
engineering courses in electrical, mechanical, and structural
engineering to prepare students to be involved in building projects
of all kinds. Architectural engineering dates to 1913 at KU, and the
undergraduate program has been ABET accredited since accreditation
began. The B.S. in architectural engineering is a five-year,
165-hour program. Students in civil engineering can identify civil
or environmental engineering as a concentration. Students in
architectural engineering can specialize in one of three
concentrations: building environmental systems, building
construction, or building structural systems.
Objective:
The objective of the program is to prepare students for professional
engineering practice or graduate study in the analysis, design,
construction, and operation of building systems.
Outcomes:
The Program Outcomes that have been stablished based on the Program
Educational Objective are as follows:
-
Students graduate with a level of proficiency in mathematics,
basic science, programming, and engineering science that
provides them with the educational foundation they need to keep
pace with rapid technological change throughout their career.
-
Students graduate with the analytical and technical skills they
need to analyze and design structural systems and building
mechanical and electrical systems as entry-level engineers or to
be prepared for graduate school.
-
Students graduate with an appreciation of architectural design
and the need to design engineered systems within the context of
architecture.
-
Students graduate with an understanding of how architectural and
engineered systems interrelate to produce functional and
economic built environments.
-
Students graduate with an understanding of the design and
construction process that will allow them to work effectively as
a member of an interdisciplinary project team.
The Architectural Engineering Program is accredited by the
