P.E. and Career Pursuits
Professional Engineering (P.E.) Registration
Having an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree is
becoming a requirement in many states for Professional Engineering
registration.
Master's, doctoral, or other graduate engineering degrees at KU and
almost all other institutions, are not considered the "first
professional degree" for Professional Engineering registration
purposes. The Kansas State Board of Technical Professions makes all
decisions regarding exam eligibility in Kansas.
KU's bachelor of science degrees in civil engineering and
architectural engineering are ABET-accredited. In the past some
individuals with undergraduate engineering degrees from abroad have
taken the first registration exam in Kansas after completing their
graduate engineering degrees. After passing the first exam and
completing other requirements, they have taken the final P.E.
registration exam.
Via "reciprocity", most U.S. states recognize an original P.E.
license from another state, and allow licensing in their state.
However, each state's licensing requirements vary somewhat. By
earning a KU graduate engineering degree, many states in the U.S.
give one year's credit toward the work experience requirement for
P.E. registration.
Job Search
The Engineering Career
Center organizes two career fairs each year. Students also have
the ability to take part in on-campus interviews and several other
services offered through the center. CEAE graduate students also may
benefit from the numerous professional contacts of their adviser
and department faculty. CEAE students usually accept positions
within days to a few months of beginning their employment searches.
Many firms and organizations in the Kansas City area and nationally
are currently seeking our graduates.
